The Best Hair Product Guide for Men

Twenty or thirty years ago it was very uncommon to see more than two or three styling products for men on the shelves. Most often there would be one to hide the grey hair, one general use gel, and perhaps some hair care shampoos. However, over the last few years the call for shampoos, conditioners, and other styling needs has gone up considerably. Now the men want to look as sexy and hot as the women and to do that they need their own products as just grabbing any old gel no longer works. However, for those that are unsure what else to use or how to use it here is a guide to the best hair products for men and why they are used.

First it is important to understand that styling products come into two separate slots. One slot is called the fixatives and the other is called the pliables.

Fixatives

Fixatives are those products that dry hard like a gel or a hair spray. These are not the best products to use if you are hoping for that feeling of seeming running their fingers through your hair. So if you feel that you will get lucky you may want to try the pliables.

Gel

Gels are no more than a water based product that works to hold your hair with that slick wet look. They do dry hard as mentioned above but if you get a really good one you will find that the hold is great. However, when you choose the cheaper kind that you find at your local grocer then you will find that it often dries white and flaky. Just remember that the thinner and finer your hair the lighter the hold you will want. And the opposite is true as if your hair is thick then you will want the more firm hold. So be sure to know not only what you want to be doing later with your hair but what type of hair you have as well.

Hair Spray

Like a gel you will find that the hair spray will also offer you a light to firm hold. And just like the gel you will go by what type of hair you have. The main purpose to the hair spray is not to style but to hold the style.

Pliables

Pliables are products that will stay flexible no matter what you do. These come in the forms of pomades and waxes, and feel better in your hair then the fixatives.

Pomade

The pomade is a product that can be both water and wax based. They are used to not only keep hold of your hair but to also add a shine to it. In fact, there is a lot of reasons why this particular product has been so popular and well used for so many years. If you are looking for that short slick look then the pomade is perfect for you. It is great for those textured styles when shine is wanted and it really helps separate the longer hairstyling. Just be sure to chose the right one though because some brands can make your hair simply look greasy and flat. Also, you can avoid this issue if you are sure to not use more than needed.

Waxes

Although waxes are extremely similar to the pomade they do have some major differences. For instance, because the wax is petroleum based you do not want to add it to wet hair, only dry hair. Also, you will find that it is the better product if you have thick hair. Happy grooming!
